Points Travel for Beginners

Congratulations you've taken the first step into a world of travel for less. On this page we'll share the tips we've picked up that will help you get started.

Step 1: Sign up for loyalty programs.

This seems like a no brainer but you have to do it to get started. Sign up for airline, hotel, and car rental programs that make sense for the kind of travel you want to do. They are all free so sign up for as many as you like.

Step 2: Sign up for a loyalty program manager.

These online apps allow you to manage virtually all your loyalty programs in one place.   There are many of these. Points.com is popular. I use awardwallet.com   Pick the one that is right for you.

Now that you have a manager take all your login info for those loyalty programs and add them to your manager.  These apps even have mobile apps so you can view your points on the go.

Step 3:Get a Credit Card with a rewards Program

Choosing the right card is important and should be done based on your travel goals. there are plenty of cards like the Chase Sapphire cards that allow you to use points for all your travel needs.

Before you apply though it's a good idea to check your credit. You can do this for free on many sites including CreditKarma.com.  You want to have a a score of 680 or more.  If your credit is 740 or above you should be able to get any type of credit card you want.

Once you have a card you can earn points and then go somewhere fun.  A tactic I use is to use multiple cards. That way I get multiple sign up bonuses and can maximize points by using the card that gives me the best return for my purchase.
